Grinding of metallic surfaces
Grinding metallic surfaces with a wide variety of grinding tools such as contact wheels with different running surfaces and abrasive belts – so-called “belt grinding” – was already known in the USA before the Second World War, but was only introduced in Europe in the early 1950s.
Pioneering work was carried out by Fritz-Gerhard Kemper – the founder and long-standing managing partner of today’s company KEMPER-KONTAKT Gert Kemper GmbH, Wuppertal, as the manufacturer of the contact wheels – and senior engineer Otto Schleppi from the company GREIF in Hagen. In later years, the Ludwig Löser company in Speyer took over the role of leading manufacturer of belt sanders.
However, the grinding of metallic surfaces is not limited to the belt grinding process, which has become indispensable in the industrial and trade sectors. Flap discs are used wherever the sanding tool needs to be particularly snug to the workpiece or where fine surface sanding, smoothing and pre-polishing or the creation of galvanizable surfaces is required.
They are manufactured in a wide variety of shapes, whether as a shank tool for use on manual machines or as a flap disc for use on sanding lines, sanding carousels, conventional sanding blocks or even on flexible shaft machines.
For particularly contoured workpieces, flap sanders with very flexible, slotted abrasive cloth can also be used – see the ORIGINAL-KEMPER-SCHLEIFSTERN®.
Fillet weld sanders enable bevel-free sanding in corners, edges, grooves and angles.
Non-woven abrasive tools are used for grinding stainless steel, especially for creating elegant, satin-finished surfaces. In many cases, this is also referred to as Brushing stainless steel.
All grinding tools mentioned here – contact wheels for the belt grinding process, flap wheels, non-woven abrasive tools, the ORIGINAL KEMPER GRINDING STUD® are manufactured to the highest consistent quality by KEMPER-KONTAKT Gert Kemper GmbH and sold worldwide.
